About Vellore Institute of Technology
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, is one of India's most prestigious and highly-ranked private deemed universities. Founded in 1984 by Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former parliamentarian and minister in the Tamil Nadu Government, the institution began as Vellore Engineering College (VEC) — a self-financing institution established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956. VIT was affiliated to the University of Madras until 2000, after which it was conferred the status of a Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, in 2001. In September 2006, the institution was officially renamed as VIT University, and in subsequent years it came to be popularly known again as Vellore Institute of Technology. The university is promoted by the North Arcot Education and Charitable Trust and is headed by its founder Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan. Spread across a sprawling 370-acre campus on the Ranipet–Katpadi Road, VIT Vellore is a co-educational university that offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and doctoral programmes across engineering, management, science, design, architecture, and humanities.
