About Silchar Medical College, Silchar

Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), established on August 15, 1968, stands as a premier government-run medical institution in the southern part of Assam. Located in Ghungoor, Silchar, it serves as the solitary referral hospital for the Barak Valley, catering to the healthcare needs of not only southern Assam but also the neighboring states of Mizoram, North Tripura, West Manipur, and South Meghalaya. The institution's inception was a response to the critical shortage of medical facilities in the region, initially recommended by an expert committee in 1960. Since its formal inauguration, the college has evolved into a massive healthcare hub spread across 620 bighas of land. The college is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences. Academic excellence at SMCH is reflected in its diverse offerings, ranging from the foundational MBBS degree to various postgraduate MD and MS specializations, as well as diploma and nursing courses. The attached hospital currently operates with over 800 beds, though expansion projects including a 500-bed new block and a JICA-funded super-specialty unit are currently underway to increase capacity to over 1,500 beds. This high patient inflow ensures that students receive unparalleled clinical exposure and hands-on surgical experience, making it one of the most sought-after medical colleges in North East India. The campus foster a multicultural environment, primarily involving Assamese and Bengali traditions, and remains a cornerstone of medical education and tertiary healthcare in the region.
