The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), located in the serene environment of Kakryal near Katra in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, was established as a visionary healthcare and medical education initiative by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB). Designed to augment the healthcare infrastructure in the union territory, the institute was integrated with the established 467-bedded Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital to provide a comprehensive platform for clinical training and medical research. The institution was conceptualized to offer high-quality medical education, with an initial intake capacity of 50 MBBS seats approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in September 2025. The campus infrastructure included advanced pre-clinical and para-clinical laboratories, a central library with digital resources, and modern residential facilities for students and faculty. Despite its promising inception and the support of state-of-the-art medical equipment, the institute encountered significant regulatory challenges. In January 2026, the National Medical Commission (NMC) officially withdrew the Letter of Permission (LoP) for the MBBS course, citing substantial deficiencies in faculty strength, clinical service standards, and hospital infrastructure requirements as mandated by the Undergraduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023. This regulatory action resulted in the cessation of the MBBS program, leaving the future of the institute's academic operations in a state of uncertainty. Currently, the institution functions primarily within the framework of its associated hospital facilities, while administrative discussions regarding the rectification of these deficiencies and the potential restoration of medical education continue to evolve under the guidance of the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the Shrine Board.
