Established in 1995 as the unaided wing of the historic Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE), SPIT was formally constituted as an independent institution in 2005 under the aegis of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, a renowned educational trust founded in 1938 by Kulapati K.M. Admission Process

Admission to B.Tech programs at SPIT Mumbai is conducted through the Centralized Admission Process (CAP) by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra. Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, with a minimum of 50% marks (45% for reserved categories). Valid scores in MHT-CET or JEE Main are required. 80% of seats are filled through DTE's CAP rounds, while 20% are reserved for Institute-Level (Management Quota) admissions based on MHT-CET scores.
