Originally founded in 1886 as the Calcutta School of Medicine by the visionary philanthropist and educationist Dr. Radha Gobinda Kar, the institution holds the historic distinction of being Asia's first private medical college. Established during the colonial era with the express purpose of ensuring self-sufficiency — or 'Swaraj' — in medical education and healthcare services, it laid the foundation for indigenous medical training at a time when most institutions were under direct British governmental control. The college was subsequently renamed Belgachia Medical College (1916–1918), then Carmichael Medical College (1918–1948), before being finally renamed R.G.
