About QUEEN MARY'S COLLEGE

Queen Mary's College (Autonomous), Chennai, holds the distinct honor of being the first women's college in the city and the third oldest in India. Established in 1914 by Dorothy de la Hey with the support of Lord Pentland, the then Governor of Madras, the college was originally known as the Madras College for Women. Over its century-long history, it has played a pioneering role in female education, notably graduating the first three child-widows in South India. The institution is a government-run autonomous body affiliated with the University of Madras and has been accredited with an 'A+' grade by NAAC. In the 2025 NIRF rankings, it secured the 62nd position among colleges nationwide, a testament to its enduring academic excellence. Spread across 17 to 30 acres of prime real estate on the Marina Beach coastline, the campus is a unique blend of heritage architecture and modern facilities. The iconic 'Capper House' and subsequent historic buildings like Pentland House and Jeypore House define its aesthetic. The college offers a vast array of 76 courses across 9 degrees, including flagship programs in Science, Management, and Humanities. It is particularly famous for its Music Department, being the first college in India to offer a music course in 1928. Today, the college serves over 5,000 students, mostly from economically weaker sections, providing them with world-class education at government-subsidized rates. With a mission to promote 'common sense and consideration,' the college fosters holistic development through its strong placement cell, research-oriented postgraduate departments, and vibrant campus life that includes various clubs like NSS, Rotaract, and specialized subject associations.
