National Institute of Technology Durgapur (NIT Durgapur or NITDGP), formerly known as Regional Engineering College Durgapur (REC Durgapur), is one of India's foremost public technical universities and a premier Institute of National Importance, established by an Act of Parliament in 1960. Located in the industrial city of Durgapur, West Bengal, approximately 160 kilometres north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah–Delhi main railway route and overlooking National Highway No. 2 (the Grand Trunk Road), the institute sits at a historically and industrially strategic location. Spanning a lush, fully residential campus of 187 acres, NIT Durgapur is a co-educational institution that houses over 4,973 students (as of 2025), including 3,571 undergraduates, 718 postgraduates, and 684 doctoral researchers.
