About National Institute of Industrial Engineering

The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), now officially known as the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai), is one of India's most prestigious management and industrial engineering institutions. Established in 1963 by the Government of India with financial and technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the International Labour Organization (ILO), the institute was originally created to develop skilled industrial engineering professionals for the Indian economy. Registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, NITIE operated as an autonomous body governed by a Board of Governors comprising eminent personalities from government, industry, and academia. An Act of Parliament subsequently upgraded the institute to an Institute of National Importance under the IIM Act, renaming it IIM Mumbai.
