About KERALA STATE INSTITUTE OF DESIGN

The Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID) is a premier design institution established in 2008 by the Government of Kerala. It operates under the Department of Labour and Skills and is managed by the Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE). Situated in the serene suburban landscape of Chandanathope, Kollam, KSID was founded with the strategic support of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, which continues to provide mentorship for curriculum development and faculty training. The institute’s primary vision is to bridge the gap between the traditional artisan community and the modern design industry, creating a vibrant ecosystem of innovation and social relevance. KSID stands out as one of the first state-owned design institutes in India, offering high-quality design education at a fraction of the cost of private entities. Its campus, sprawling over 31,000 sq. ft., is equipped with specialized laboratories such as the Woodworking and Bamboo Workshop, Plastic and Metal Prototyping labs, and advanced IT Integrated Communication labs. The curriculum is meticulously designed to foster design thinking, technical proficiency, and cultural sensitivity. Students benefit from a multidisciplinary approach, learning to solve complex problems through human-centric design. With affiliations to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and approval from AICTE, the institute provides a robust academic framework. The academic environment is enriched by guest lectures from industry veterans and collaborative projects with local craft clusters, ensuring that graduates are not only industry-ready but also socially conscious designers capable of driving economic and cultural growth in the region.
