The Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (IPGME&R), popularly known as IPGMER or PG Hospital, is one of India's oldest, most distinguished, and most prestigious government medical institutions. Situated at 244 Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, Bhowanipore, Kolkata, West Bengal, the institute was formally inaugurated on 16th January 1957 by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) and is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Indian Nursing Council (INC). The institute operates in close association with the Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital (SSKM Hospital), which functions as the primary teaching hospital and is collectively referred to as PG Hospital — a tertiary-level government referral centre for the entire state of West Bengal. The history of the campus dates back to 1707, when the first hospital in Calcutta was established at the Old Fort premises. The facility was subsequently renamed Presidency General Hospital and, in 1954, was rechristened Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital to honour the great philanthropist of Calcutta. The institute has since evolved into a national centre of excellence for medical education, clinical training, and biomedical research.
