About Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi

The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi, commonly known as IIT (BHU) or IIT BHU, is one of India's most prestigious and historically significant technical institutions. Situated within the magnificent 1,300-acre campus of Banaras Hindu University on the southern banks of the holy Ganges River in the ancient city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, the institute stands as a beacon of academic excellence and engineering tradition. The origins of IIT BHU trace back to 1919, when the visionary educationist and patriot Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya established the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) as part of the newly founded Banaras Hindu University. He foresaw the critical role that technical education would play in building an independent India. Over the following decades, the College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET) was established in 1923 and the College of Technology (TECHNO) in 1932. In 1968, these three prestigious engineering colleges were merged to form the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU). IT-BHU began admitting students through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) alongside the IITs from 1972, establishing itself as a top-tier engineering institution in the country. On June 29, 2012, through an Act of Parliament — the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2012 — IT-BHU was formally elevated to the status of an Indian Institute of Technology, becoming IIT (BHU) Varanasi. IIT BHU offers one of the widest ranges of undergraduate engineering specializations among all IITs, spanning 16 B.Tech programs across disciplines such as Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology, Industrial Chemistry, and more. The institute also offers five-year Integrated Dual Degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programs, M.Tech (postgraduate engineering), M.Sc, M.Pharm, B.Arch, and Ph.D programs across 15 departments and 3 interdisciplinary schools. As per NIRF 2025 rankings, IIT BHU is ranked #10 in the Engineering category, #31 Overall, and #22 among Research Institutions nationally. In the QS World University Rankings 2026, the institute holds the #566 position globally. The institute is approved by UGC and AICTE and is administered by the IIT Council under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. IIT BHU's lush residential campus of approximately 425 acres within the larger BHU ecosystem provides a holistic learning environment. Facilities include world-class research labs equipped with cutting-edge instruments like Transmission Electron Microscopes, a Supercomputing Centre, centralized and departmental libraries with 1,38,000+ volumes and access to 15,000 e-journals, 16 residential hostels, a multi-sport complex, wellness centre, auditorium, amphitheatre, medical facility, and a full-service Gymkhana. The institute's four major annual festivals — Technex (tech), Kashiyatra (cultural), Spardha (sports), and FMC Weekend (film and media) — reflect the richness of student life. The institute has a strong training and placement ecosystem. During the 2025–26 placement season, IIT BHU recorded a highest package of INR 1.67 Crore per annum and an average package of approximately INR 29 LPA, with over 1,005 job offers in the first five days of placements alone. Top global recruiters including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA, Goldman Sachs, MasterCard, and Databricks regularly visit the campus. The institute is committed to implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and advancing multidisciplinary research for a knowledge-driven economy.
