Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar
About Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), established in 2008, is a premier public technical university and an Institute of National Importance recognized by the Government of India. Located on a sprawling 400-acre campus along the serene banks of the Sabarmati River in Palaj, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, IITGN stands as one of the most forward-thinking and progressive institutions in the country. IITGN is one of the eight new-generation IITs announced by India's Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2008 and began operations the same year from a temporary campus at Vishwakarma Government Engineering College (VGEC), Ahmedabad, under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. The institute shifted to its permanent campus in Palaj, Gandhinagar, which has grown into India's first 5-star GRIHA LD (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment – Large Development) certified campus, reflecting IITGN's deep commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The institute is nationally accredited and ranked #25 in Engineering, #36 in Research Institutions, and #39 overall by the NIRF Rankings 2025. Globally, IITGN holds the #801–850 position in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the only institution from Gujarat ranked among the top 1,000 universities in the world. Academically, IITGN offers a diverse portfolio of over 37 programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and doctoral levels. At the UG level, it offers B.Tech in eight specialisations: Computer Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Integrated Circuit Design and Technology. The institute pioneered cognitive science education in India, being the first IIT to offer both M.Sc and M.Tech in Cognitive Science. The 2026-27 session also introduces new M.Des and M.Tech in Maritime Engineering programmes. What distinguishes IITGN from older IITs is its unique interdisciplinary philosophy – engineering students are required to take courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and design as part of their core curriculum. This liberal education model produces engineers who are not just technically proficient but also socially aware, ethically grounded, and creative problem solvers. Research and innovation are at the heart of the IITGN experience. The institute's Research Park and Innovation & Entrepreneurship Centre (iHub) have supported over 90 startups, hosted 40+ companies, and filed 100+ patents. In 2025 alone, IITGN signed 10+ MoUs with leading global universities, engaged with 40+ international institutions, and ran several joint international workshops. PhD fellowship amounts range from ₹37,000 to ₹42,000 per month for eligible candidates. The campus itself is a vibrant, residential academic community with state-of-the-art infrastructure. Six air-conditioned hostels (three for UG, two for PG, one for women), a 5-star FSSAI Eat Right Campus rated mess (Aradhna Cafeteria), a sports complex with football, hockey, basketball and volleyball facilities, a central library, advanced research labs, and a dedicated shuttle service to Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad all contribute to a holistic student experience. The student body of over 2,350 students participates in numerous clubs – drama (Abhinaya), quizzing, music, literary, astronomy, and debating – alongside major cultural and technical fests. IITGN places emphasis on financial accessibility. Scholarships include Merit-cum-Means (MCM) awards, SC/ST fee waivers, merit-based incentives for high CPI scorers, and zero-interest institutional loans. All students are also covered under a medical insurance policy. About 25–30% of students receive some form of scholarship or fee relief. In terms of placements, IITGN attracts top-tier recruiters across IT & Software, Finance & Consulting, Core Engineering, and Energy sectors.
