About Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad, commonly known as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, is one of India's most prestigious and historically significant technical institutions. Established on December 9, 1926, by the British Indian Government on the lines of the Royal School of Mines, London, it was formally inaugurated by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India. Originally conceived to support India's thriving mining and mineral sector, ISM Dhanbad grew steadily into a comprehensive research and education institution. On May 25, 2016, the Union Cabinet approved its conversion into an Indian Institute of Technology under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, making it the third oldest institute to attain IIT status after IIT Roorkee and IIT (BHU) Varanasi. Located in Sardar Patel Nagar, Dhanbad, Jharkhand — at the heart of India's prime coking coal belt — IIT (ISM) Dhanbad operates a fully residential campus spread across 218 acres, with an additional 175-acre Nirsa campus under development. The institute is recognised as an 'Institute of National Importance' and is governed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is dually approved by AICTE and UGC.
