About Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, is India's foremost public research university, widely regarded as the nation's premier institution for science, engineering, design, and management education. Established in 1909 through a visionary collaboration between the industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the royal family of Mysore (Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV), and the Government of India, IISc has been at the vanguard of scientific discovery and technological innovation for over a century. Locally known as the 'Tata Institute', the institute is located at the heart of Bengaluru, spanning a lush, fully residential campus of 440 acres in the Malleswaram–Yeshwantpur area. In 2009, IISc acquired a second campus in Challakere taluk, Chitradurga district, Karnataka, further expanding its research and academic footprint. IISc is a Deemed-to-be University (De Novo category) recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and holds the distinguished NAAC A++ accreditation with a score of 3.67. In 2018, the Ministry of Education bestowed upon IISc the prestigious 'Institute of Eminence' (IoE) status, one of the first six institutions in India to receive this honour. The institute is affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and the Millennium Science Initiative Alliance (MISA). Academically, IISc is organized into 45 departments across six major divisions: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Science (EECS), Mechanical Sciences, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Research. The institute offers a rich portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and integrated programs in science, engineering, design, and management. Programs include the flagship B.Sc. (Research) available in eight specializations, B.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing (and newer specializations launched in 2026), M.Tech. across 23+ engineering disciplines, M.Des. in Product Design, M.Mgt. in Management, M.Sc. in sciences, and Ph.D. and Integrated Ph.D. programs across all divisions. IISc consistently leads national and international rankings. It holds the 1st rank in NIRF 2025 (Research category) and 2nd in Overall, the 219th rank in QS World University Rankings 2026, and 201st in Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings 2026. The institute is among the top citations-per-faculty institutions globally, reflecting the depth and impact of its research output. The institute's vibrant campus life includes the J.R.D. Tata Memorial Library (established 1911), J.N.
