About Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur

Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur) — formerly known as Bengal Engineering College — is a premier public technological and research university located at Shibpur, Howrah, West Bengal, India. Established on 24 November 1856 as the Calcutta Civil Engineering College, it is India's second-oldest engineering institution with a glorious legacy spanning over 169 years. It carries the motto 'Uttiṣṭhata jāgrata prāpya varān nibodhata' — meaning 'Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.' In 2014, through an amendment to the NITSER Act of Parliament, the erstwhile Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESU) was elevated and renamed as the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur — becoming the first and only IIEST in India and an Institute of National Importance (INI) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The institute is spread across a lush 49-hectare (approximately 123 acres) green campus on the western bank of the river Hooghly, adjacent to the iconic Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden and opposite the Kolkata Port.
