About GOVERNMENT ENGINEERING COLLEGE THRISSUR

Government Engineering College Thrissur (GEC-T), popularly known as GECT, is one of the most prestigious and historically significant public engineering and research institutions in Kerala, India. Established in 1957, it holds the distinction of being the second-oldest government engineering college in Kerala — the first to be established after the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956 — and stands right after the College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET, est. 1939). The college campus is spread across a sprawling 75 acres of green land at Ramavarmapuram, located about 5 km from the heart of Thrissur city and approximately 6 km from Thrissur Railway Junction. The institution was originally housed at the Chembukkavu campus of the Maharaja's Technological Institute in 1957. A landmark moment in the college's history came on 26 April 1958, when the foundation stone of the new campus was laid by India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The college shifted to its current campus in October 1960, and was formally inaugurated on 2 February 1962 by Pattom A. Thanu Pillai, the then Chief Minister of Kerala. Initially, the college offered undergraduate programmes only in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. Over the decades, it has grown exponentially to offer 8 B.Tech specialisations, B.Arch (5 years), 18+ M.Tech specialisations, MCA (3 years), M.Plan (Urban Planning), and Ph.D research programmes across multiple engineering and allied disciplines. As of 2025–26, the total annual seat intake across all programmes is approximately 1,327. GECT is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) since 2015, and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Council of Architecture (CoA). All engineering programmes are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and the institution holds ISO 9001:2008 certification. The NIRF 2024 ranked GECT in the 201–300 band in the Engineering category nationally, and among the top 5 engineering colleges in Kerala. The college boasts a robust Training and Placement Cell that connects students with over 700 companies annually. Top recruiters include global names like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Bosch, L&T, Tata Elxsi, Oracle, and IBM. The highest placement package recorded is INR 32 LPA, with an average package of INR 6.5 LPA. GECT has a vibrant campus culture with active student clubs including IEEE, ISTE, IIChE, Film & Theatre Club (Abhram), Music Club (Bansuri), and Dance Club (DHD). The college hosts DYUTHI, a national-level techno-cultural festival, Confluence arts fest, and the GEC Soccer League (GSL) and GEC Premier League (GPL). A historic TEDx event was organised on campus in April 2018, the first TEDx event in Central Kerala. The college has produced distinguished alumni including Dr. K. Radhakrishnan (Padma Bhushan, Former Chairman of ISRO), Dr. M. Chandra Dathan (Padmashree, Former Director of VSSC), author Anand Neelakantan, lyricist Sreekumaran Thampi, and politician V. T. Balram, among others. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 16:1 and over 205 qualified faculty members, GECT continues to deliver quality technical education and drive research innovation in Kerala.
