About Faculty of Management Studies Banaras Hindu University
The Institute of Management Studies (IMS), formerly known as the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), is one of India's most prestigious and affordable management schools. Located within the sprawling 1,300-acre campus of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, the institute has a proud legacy dating back to 1968, when it was established as a Department of Management Studies within the Faculty of Commerce. Recognising the growing importance of management education, BHU elevated it to an independent Faculty of Management Studies in 1984, and further upgraded it to the Institute of Management Studies in 2016. This evolution reflects the institute's consistent academic excellence and national recognition. Founded under the visionary guidance of Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of BHU, the institute has produced over 4,000 professional managers who have gone on to make their mark in industry, government, and academia across India and the world. FMS BHU holds the dual approval of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) and UGC (University Grants Commission), and has been identified as one of five Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) centres by AICTE — a distinction that underscores its academic and research capabilities. The institute offers a range of programmes including the flagship two-year full-time MBA (General Management), MBA (International Business), MBA (Agribusiness), a part-time Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA), and a Ph.D. in Management. These programmes are designed to blend rigorous theoretical foundations with real-world applicability through case studies, live projects, summer internships, and industry interactions. Academically, FMS BHU has consistently ranked among the top management institutes in India. It secured 48th rank in the NIRF 2024 Management category, 28th rank by IIRF 2025, and 41st among MBA colleges by Times of India 2024. Its placement record is equally impressive — in the 2024 placement season, the highest package offered for MBA & MBA-IB was ₹23.50 LPA, with an average of ₹11.10 LPA. Over 91 companies participated, placing 156 students. What truly sets FMS BHU apart is its unmatched return on investment. With total MBA fees of approximately ₹1.16 lakh for two years — among the lowest for any reputed management institute in India — it offers exceptional value. Students also benefit from BHU's comprehensive campus infrastructure, including a central library with over 1.5 million books, modern hostels, ICT-enabled classrooms, a sports complex, health centre, and the Atal Incubation Centre (AIC) for budding entrepreneurs, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India in 2018. The institute's residential setup, cultural diversity, and vibrant student life make it a unique management education destination.Admission Process
