About Calcutta National Medical College

Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC), formally known as Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH), is one of the most distinguished government medical institutions in Eastern India, located at 32 Gorachand Road, Beniapukur, Kolkata, West Bengal – 700014. Colloquially referred to as 'Chittaranjan Hospital', the institution carries a remarkable legacy that is deeply intertwined with India's freedom movement and modern healthcare history. The roots of CNMC trace back to April 14, 1921, when the 'National Medical Institute' – also known as 'Jatiya Ayurbigyan Vidyalaya' – was founded as a product of the Non-Cooperation Movement, and was inaugurated by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. A parallel institution, the Calcutta Medical Institute, was established in 1907. In 1948, these two pioneering institutions were amalgamated to form the Calcutta National Medical Institute, which later evolved into the present-day Calcutta National Medical College. In 1967, the institution was nationalised and placed under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal. CNMC is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), Kolkata, and is duly recognised and accredited by the National Medical Commission (NMC), Government of India. The college is also recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and accredited by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) for relevant programmes. Academically, CNMC offers a comprehensive range of medical education programmes spanning undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty levels. At the undergraduate level, the MBBS programme admits 250 students annually and spans 4.5 years of coursework followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship. The college also offers B.Sc. Nursing and B.Sc. Nursing (Post Basic) programmes. At the postgraduate level, 135 seats are available across 19 MD and MS disciplines, encompassing both clinical and preclinical specialisations. At the super-specialty level, DM and M.Ch seats are offered in 4 specialisations including Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Urology. The college hospital is one of the largest government teaching hospitals in West Bengal, boasting a bed strength of 1,470 beds. It receives over 8,000 outpatients daily across 30+ clinical departments, providing medical students with unmatched exposure to diverse and complex cases. The hospital houses an Intensive Care Unit, a Trauma Care Centre, and a dedicated Centre of Excellence on Mental Health at the Pavlov Hospital campus. Notably, CNMC's maternity ward is the largest in West Bengal and has received the prestigious LaQshya certification from the Government of India for quality maternal and intrapartum care services. The institution is served by a strong faculty comprising approximately 88 teaching staff members across all departments. The college campus is equipped with spacious lecture theatres with sloped seating, well-furnished anatomy dissection halls, dedicated research laboratories, a central library housing extensive print and digital resources, and a campus-wide high-speed Wi-Fi network (100 Mbps leased line). Seven student hostels – four for male and three for female students – cater to both UG and PG scholars. CNMC houses an active ICMR-recognized Research Centre that has facilitated the publication of over 500 research papers in indexed journals and has secured research grants for clinical and translational studies. The institution actively fosters a vibrant student community life through AGON – its annual cultural festival, widely regarded as the biggest medical college festival in Eastern India – and the academic festival Ingineum. Students also benefit from the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship and other state government scholarship schemes. Admissions to CNMC are entirely merit-based through the NEET examination series: NEET-UG for MBBS, NEET-PG for MD/MS, and NEET-SS for DM/M.Ch. Eighty-five percent of MBBS seats are reserved for West Bengal State Quota candidates, with the remaining 15% falling under the All India Quota governed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
