About Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai (Mumbai Veterinary College)

Established in 1886, Bombay Veterinary College (now known as Mumbai Veterinary College) stands as a beacon of veterinary excellence in India and is among the oldest such institutions in Asia. The college was founded through the vision of Prof. James Henry Steel and initially operated within the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals in Parel. Today, it functions as a constituent college of the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU), Nagpur. The institution is recognized for its rigorous academic curriculum and its significant contribution to animal healthcare and research. The college operates from two campuses: the main administrative and postgraduate campus at Parel, and the undergraduate campus at Goregaon (Aarey Milk Colony). This dual-campus setup provides students with a unique blend of urban clinical experience and rural-style livestock management. The Goregaon campus houses the Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, while the Parel campus is home to the specialized clinical departments. Over the decades, BVC has produced thousands of veterinarians who serve in government sectors, private industries, and international research organizations. With a focus on Animal Genetics, Surgery, and Public Health, BVC maintains high standards of clinical practice through its association with the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital, which treats a massive volume of small and large animals daily. This ensures that students receive hands-on training that is unparalleled in the region. Despite the heritage nature of its buildings, the college remains at the forefront of veterinary science, continuously updating its laboratories and diagnostic facilities to meet global standards in animal welfare and agricultural growth.
