About BOMBAY NATURAL HISTORY SOCIETY (BNHS) MAHARASHTRA

The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), established in 1883, is one of the oldest and largest non-governmental organizations in India engaged in conservation and biodiversity research. Headquartered at the iconic Hornbill House in Mumbai, BNHS has been a pioneer in the field of Indian natural history for over 140 years. It is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Science and Technology. BNHS serves as a premier institution for wildlife research, bird migration studies, and conservation advocacy, influencing environmental policy at both national and international levels. The society's Conservation Education Centre (CEC) in Goregaon provides an immersive learning environment for students and enthusiasts. BNHS is renowned for its extensive natural history collections, which include over 1,20,000 specimens of birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects, serving as a vital resource for taxonomists and researchers. Beyond research, the society publishes the prestigious 'Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society' (JBNHS), which has documented Indian flora and fauna since 1886. The society's mission is to guide the conservation of biodiversity through research, education, and public awareness. Students at BNHS gain unparalleled field experience, working alongside veteran scientists and naturalists. As a recognized center for higher learning affiliated with the University of Mumbai, it offers Ph.D. and M.Sc. by Research programs, alongside specialized hybrid certificate courses that bridge the gap between academic theory and practical field conservation. With its 15-year roadmap for wetland restoration and vulture conservation programs, BNHS remains at the forefront of protecting India's natural heritage in 2026.
