About All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Kalyani (AIIMS Kalyani) is a premier autonomous medical institution of national importance established by the Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Announced in 2014 and formally approved by the Union Cabinet on October 7, 2015, the institute was notified through The Gazette of India on January 24, 2018, by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. AIIMS Kalyani commenced its first academic session on September 4, 2019, with an inaugural batch of 50 MBBS students, and has since expanded its annual MBBS intake to 125 seats. Located at NH-34 Connector, Basantapur, Saguna, in the Nadia district of West Bengal, the institute is spread across a sprawling 179.82-acre campus in the Kalyani township, approximately 50 kilometres from Kolkata. The campus is well connected via road and rail, with the Kalyani Railway Station situated just 3 kilometres away and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport approximately 43 kilometres from the institute. AIIMS Kalyani is one of six newly established AIIMS institutions that gained functional autonomy in 2019, and it awards its own medical degrees and diplomas, which are recognized under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act. The institute functions as an Institute of National Importance, embodying the vision of bridging healthcare inequities at regional, speciality, and human resource levels across Eastern India. The institutional infrastructure comprises a 960-bed Super Specialty Hospital, a dedicated medical college complex, smart air-conditioned classrooms, advanced research laboratories, a comprehensive central library inaugurated in March 2021, and fully equipped auditoriums. The hospital is organized into 34 specialty departments offering comprehensive OPD services operational since 2021, and IPD services launched in 2024 with 360 inpatient beds and 18 ICU beds. The hospital also integrates AYUSH (Alternate Systems of Medicine) services to promote holistic healthcare delivery. As of its latest operational records, AIIMS Kalyani has recorded over 41,000 total IPD admissions, more than 15.87 lakh laboratory tests, over 15.92 lakh total OPD footfall, and more than 10,000 trauma and emergency cases. Academically, AIIMS Kalyani offers a comprehensive range of programmes spanning undergraduate, postgraduate, super-speciality, and doctoral levels. These include MBBS (125 seats), B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing (60 seats), B.Sc. Paramedical streams including Medical Laboratory Technology, Operation Theatre Technology, Optometry, Radiology and Imaging Technology, and Cardiac Technology, as well as MD/MS (16 specialisations), MDS, DM, M.Ch., M.Sc. Nursing, M.Sc. in Medical Sciences, and Ph.D. programmes. Admission to MBBS is strictly through NEET UG, while PG and super-speciality admissions are conducted through INI-CET and INI-SS examinations respectively. One of AIIMS Kalyani's most distinctive features is its ultra-subsidized fee structure. The total academic fee for the entire 5.5-year MBBS programme amounts to approximately ₹9,500 — one of the lowest in the country — while PG programmes carry fees as low as ₹1,927 for the first year. Interns receive a monthly stipend of approximately ₹30,070, and postgraduate residents are provided hostel accommodation at no additional rent charge. The institute maintains a strong emphasis on research and academic excellence, with active collaborations with IITs and other premier national institutions. A one-to-one student–faculty mentorship programme ensures personalized academic guidance. AIIMS Kalyani is ranked 45th out of 632 colleges in the Medical category nationally by Collegedunia (2025) and 32nd by IIRF (2025), reflecting its growing stature in India's medical education landscape.
