Established in 2017 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY), it stands as an Institute of National Importance dedicated to correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare. The institute spans a sprawling 189-acre permanent campus, which was inaugurated by the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023. AIIMS Guwahati has rapidly transitioned from its temporary functioning at Narakasur Hilltop to a fully operational modern facility. The academic wing offers a comprehensive MBBS program, which commenced in January 2021, followed by B.Sc. Nursing, MD/MS postgraduate specialties, and Ph.D. programs. The curriculum is designed to foster a research-oriented approach alongside clinical excellence. The healthcare wing currently operates as a tertiary care center featuring 25+ specialty and super-specialty departments, including Cardiology, Neurology, and Interventional Radiology. While it began with a 150-bed capacity, it is progressively scaling up to a 750-bed hospital equipped with state-of-the-art ICUs, HDUs, and 24/7 trauma services. With its strategic location, AIIMS Guwahati serves as a vital medical hub not only for the residents of Assam but for the entire North-Eastern region of India, bringing world-class medical expertise, advanced robotic surgery possibilities, and regenerative medicine to a previously underserved geography. The institute represents the pinnacle of medical education and patient care in Northeast India.
